Abstract

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMCa) is rare, comprising 1% of all salivary gland tumors. Although it is a low-grade cancer, local recurrence occurs in 23%-50% of the cases. Distant metastasis with the rate of 2.6% is rare and there are only 26 cases that have been reported to date globally. The lung is the most predominant site of distant metastasis (17 cases), followed by the liver, bones, and the brain. We report here a case of a 68-year-old female diagnosed with EMCa of the parotid gland, initially managed via parotidectomy and postoperative radiotherapy. Metastasis in the lung was noted 38 months after radiotherapy, and was treated with four cycles of platinum-based chemotherapy. Minor regression of lung nodules was observed on computed tomography and was defined as a ¡®stable disease.¡¯ Since there is no reported case of EMCa with distant metastasis in Korea, we also reviewed 26 cases of metastatic EMCa globally reported.
